RELIABLE: Presentation of project results in the area of extreme weather events 30/06/2023

The Instituto Nacional de Saúde Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) and the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) present on June 30, from 2 PM until 4 PM, at the INSA auditorium, in Lisbon, the results of the RELIABLE project - REal tIme dAshboard on BuIlDings occupants risk during extreme weather Events - developed by INSA in the area of health and epidemiology and by IST in the area of building characteristics and meteorology/climate. On the occasion, the CLIMAEXTREMO portal, a platform that identifies the buildings that present the highest health risk during extreme weather events, will be presented.

Developed by IST's Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research (IN+), in partnership with INSA and IST's research centers Maretec, ITI and ISR-Lisboa, the CLIMAEXTREMO portal stems from the RELIABLE project and uses a risk model of increased mortality based on weather forecasts and health data from municipalities in mainland Portugal, crossing these data with another model that considers the construction characteristics of more than 2 million buildings and aiming to predict temperatures inside homes.

This platform can be used by Civil Protection and health services to flag populations at higher risk and to help designing strategies for intervention and signaling of the most vulnerable populations. The CLIMAEXTREMO portal will also allow the registration of institutions and organizations to access detailed information on pre-selected locations, with the risk index, vulnerability and recommendations of the Directorate General of Health (DGS).

Funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the RELIABLE project aimed to develop a public geographic panel with real-time and high spatial resolution information about the health risks to building occupants during extreme weather events. For this purpose, the working group also had the collaboration of ADENE - Agency for Energy and the Grouping of Health Centers of Trás-os-Montes - Alto Tâmega e Barroso.
